Fuel Maintenance & Management

Poor quality fuel can seriously reduce the reliability of your generator. Broadcrown Power Engineering can help maintain and manage the quality of your fuel to protect the engine lifetime.

The fuel degradation process

Modern diesel blends can only be stored for 6 to 12 months under normal conditions. After this, your fuel will become contaminated and begin to degrade.

There are many types of fuel contaminant, and the potentially harmful risks to your generator include:

  • Loss of standby power availability;
  • Engine damage and failure;
  • Environmental and financial costs of disposing of contaminated fuel;
  • Increased operating and servicing costs.

How we can help

One quick and effective way to make sure that fuel is clean is to opt for our fuel sampling, testing and cleaning service.

We can help keep your stored fuel in peak condition by:

  • Tank-side testing for solid contaminants, bacteria and water;
  • Supplying and installing Diesel Defence Fuel polishing units;
  • Regular filter checking;
  • Replacing filters;
  • Annual testing as part of a Service Contract.

Load Bank Testing

By having your generator equipment load bank tested, you ensure that it’s ready to perform as expected in an emergency. We can perform this service for you, detecting any faults in a controlled environment rather than during an unexpected mains failure.

The potential problems

If a generator is regularly operated at less than 30% of its full rated output, you can sometimes see problems developing, including:

  • Heavy oil consumption;
  • Oil carry over, causing leaks from joints;
  • Carry over of oil and unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust system, causing further leaks;
  • Carbon build-up on valves, piston crowns and exhaust ports;
  • Fuel dilution of lubricating oil;
  • Dense smoke from the exhaust.

The solution

We always recommend that you test any standby generators on 100% rated load at least once per year to prevent problems. A full Broadcrown load bank testing service will include:

  • A free site survey;
  • A full range of load banks from 30kW up to 5MW;
  • Transport and installation;
  • A High Voltage Authorised Person where required;
  • A comprehensive test report;
  • The option of carrying out testing outside normal working hours.

Temporary generator service

We offer a full range of temporary generators ranging from 20kVA up to 1,500kVA. Multiple synchronising generators can be supplied for higher load requirements. For total peace of mind, our fully trained engineers will handle all of the installation for you.

Contingency planning

It can be hard to now what the best course of action is when a generator suffers a failure, but we can produce a contingency plan for you. This will enable a temporary generator to be installed as quickly as possible in an emergency. The contingency plans can include:

  • Details of equipment to be delivered;
  • Fuel management details;
  • Directions for delivery drivers;
  • A site plan including photos to show exact equipment location;
  • Connection type required;
  • Location of connection point;
  • Required configuration of Castell Keys etc.;
  • Generator connection procedure;
  • Generator disconnection procedure;
  • Pricing schedule;
  • Pre-approved method statement and risk assessment.
